How to own hundreds of money making websites without spending a fortune.
A lot of people hear the talk of owning hundreds of domains and running hundreds of sites and wonder how these people cover such enormous costs for domain names and hosting.
Here are a few ideas on cheaply affording and being able to host multiple domains.
1. Domains: Depending on the type of site you are making you should decide whether to use .com or .info domains. The difference? A .com domain will set you back $10 or so while you can pick up .info domains for $3 or so (at the time of writing as frequently occurs, my domain registrar has a .info domain sale for 99 cents.). As a general rule .com is always better than a .info domain but for domains that you plan to make automated and in large numbers it would be wise to size up the difference in the amount these domains will cost you and the amount you stand to make from them. For me it is more profitable based on the structure of my business to buy .coms but you should analyze the situation based on your own circumstances. In any case .infos are great to get started with if you are low on funds.
2. Hosting: When most people start making websites they just opt for the generic host that is being offered with your domain registrar. This usually means hosting one domain per host and purchasing a new host for each domain. This is likely where the misconception arises around the cost associated with owning multiple domains. Here are some examples of the normal type of multiple domain hosting options:
a. You can get a domain that has add on domains. These are the type of offers you see for hosting 10 domains for $10 a month etc. You have a primary domain then can add on domains to be hosted here also. Depending on how many sites you want this can work but the issue is that you only have a certain amount of space that has to be split over each domain you add. With a small number of domains this could work ok. This option is the cheapest but can be hard to work with when using more than say 10 domains.
b. You can get a Reseller hosting account. I use this type of account. This allows you to host usually unlimited (or else a very large number) domains and each domain gets allocated its own amount of webspace. For my account I can add as many domains as I like which are created as separate accounts with their own username and password. Each account gets 500MB of space and its own bandwidth allocations. Generally this type of account will cost you from $20 to $100 a month.
c. Dedicated server. This is the grand daddy of them all. You will need some skills in managing servers and it is the most expensive but if you are managing a lot (hundreds to thousands) of domains or getting enormous amounts of traffic this is the way to go. These will generally cost you over upwards of $200 per month.
So there you have it. If you have wondered how much it costs people to run thousands of domains now you know. Look into these options further if you are looking to cut down your costs and make running your online biz that little bit easier.
